Principal's Message

Welcome to the holiday season…..when our lives become even more packed with family, activities and festivities! Once again a very special “Thank You” to our Leopard families for the support that you have shown to LPIE with your generous donations this year…..our goal is 100% any level.

Our current Pillar of Character is Caring. In the spirit of caring and holiday giving, our annual Toys for Tots drive has begun. If you would like to contribute, your child may bring a new, unwrapped toy to school until December 14th. Our SPOT team is continuing the coin drive for those impacted by the terrible wildfires last month. Thank you to those families who have already donated to these worthy causes.

Meanwhile at school….have you noticed that your children have moved to non-fiction units of study in reading? New to our curriculum this year, Teachers College in New York has added phonics units of study for Kindergarten and First grade. These units of study are meant to compliment the units of study in reading for these grade levels. Teachers are planning three more weeks of learning between now and Winter Break. Did you know that we lose $68 of funding per child each day that a student is absent? We strongly encourage your child to come to school each day, unless they are ill.

We have received many requests for Independent Study agreements already this year. I wanted to take a few minutes to clarify the role and purpose of Independent Study. We fully recognize that there may be a time during the school year when your family needs to take your children out of school for a compelling reason. When the absence will be for 5 days, we request that you let the office and classroom teacher know that your child will be gone. Please give as much prior notice as possible, so that the teacher may prepare an appropriate and meaningful set of lessons for your child. The Independent Study packet must be returned to the teacher on the day that your child returns from the absence in order for the school district to receive credit from the state. We strongly discourage Independent Study of longer than 5 school days. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis by the principal. We know that there is no substitute for the quality of education that students receive when they are at school learning alongside their peers.

Finally…...NEW this year, our music teacher, Mr. John Speers, who is working with all of our 1st-3rd grade classes this year, has organized a Winter Sing on Friday, December 14th from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. Our 4th graders will have a vocal performance and the 5th graders will have their Band/Strings/Chorus performance on Thursday, December 20th at 9:30 a.m. Please look for more details from your child’s teacher and in Leopard Spots.

Stay warm and dry this week!
