CLASSROOM NEWS

READING:

In Reader’s Workshop we’ve been devouring books in series like Mr. Putter and Tabby, Iris and Walter, Henry and Mudge, and many more! These books allow us to study characters closely, using strategies like re-reading to learn more about our characters, bringing our characters to life, and noticing when our characters feelings change. We’re also learning to think about the lessons our books teach us.  One strategy we’re using for finding the lesson is to think back to the trouble our characters faced, how the trouble got fixed, and in turn what our characters learned from it.

WRITING:

We’ve started a realistic fiction unit in Writer’s Workshop in which we’re making up pretend characters and giving them names, imagining a place and some trouble our character can get into, and finding a way to get our characters back out of trouble. We’re learning that we can take this same character and bring them on a new adventure with some new trouble to make a new book.  We’re on our way to starting our first series of books!

MATH:

In our math workshops, we’ve been focusing a lot tricky wording that we see in word problems.  We know we need to read our problems very carefully and very slowly many times before we start to solve.  We’ve spiraled back to our geometry unit as well and have been exploring more with 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes.  Our last Problem of the Month had us looking at a race up a staircase and we had to consider many different factors to determine who won the race!
