Thursday 5/3: 1st Grade Celebration of Learning 5:00-7:00pm

Friday 5/4: Spirit Day (Crazy Hair Day)

Room 5 is learning all about Redwood Forests! Our month of April will be filled with opportunities to learn about these majestic living creatures.  On Thursday, April 26, we will have a virtual field trip in Room 23A where we will get to explore a real redwood forest and learn even more about the ecosystems they are a vital part of.

We started a new reading unit called “Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons.” We were so lucky to have received over 100 new series books for our classroom library to use in this awesome lesson.  So far we’ve been learning that readers can go on adventures with their characters.  We take sneak peaks to get ready for these adventures, we keep track of when and where (setting), and we predict what might happen next in our stories.  We also practice retelling to help us retain the story.

We are wrapping up our Opinion Writing Unit.  We are currently publishing our best opinion piece.  We’ve been practicing how to create a catchy introduction to “hook” our readers and a thoughtful ending in which we restate our opinion, retell the big reasons, and tell the reader to do something. We’ve seen a lot of creativity come out of these pieces!

In our math workshops, we’ve been focusing a lot on place value and how to make 2 digit numbers in different ways using tens and ones (for example 65 is 6 tens and 5 ones or 5 tens and 15 ones).  We’ve also explored adding and subtracting groups of tens to 2 digit numbers – we’ve used tools such as the 120’s chart and an open number line to help us with this concept. We’ve continued to work on telling time to the hour and half hour.

1st Grade Celebration of Learning

Our 1st grade students have made amazing progress since the beginning of our school year. As teachers, we have the privilege of working with your child each day and celebrating their accomplishments along the way.  Each month, their growth as readers, writers, and mathematicians has been remarkable.

You may recall last spring, you were invited to celebrate your child's progress in Kindergarten - gathering one evening with fellow families to observe the learning first hand.  Here we are one year later, and we would like you to join us for an interactive opportunity to experience hands-on reading, writing and math workshops in first grade on the evening of May 3, 2018, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm. (This Celebration of Learning replaces our traditional Open House in May.)

We'll gather in the Multi-Purpose Room for a brief welcome.  Fro there, you'll rotate through three consecutive workshops, along with a group of families and first graders.  At the conclusion, you will have an opportunity to view your child's work showcased in his/her classroom.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, May 3rd.  Please make sure to allow time for parking/walking.  We'll begin promptly at 5:00pm.  As a courtesy - recognizing this evening is celebrating to your first graders accomplishments - we would appreciate if you would make arrangements for childcare for older and younger siblings.  Thank you. :)
