Room 5's Classroom News

Room 5 is on fire!  It is unbelievable how much everyone has grown as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, and so much more since the beginning of the year.

We’re studying Owls this month … we’re exploring these beautiful creatures through science, art, math, writing and literature.  We will even get a visit from some live Owls on January 22!

We are continuing to work hard in our nonfiction reading. We’ve started noticing and thinking about key words in our topics.  We’ve also begun to take note of really interesting parts and have practiced sharing them with our reading partners and the class.

We finished our  “How To” unit in writing and we’ve moved into “All About” books.  Presently we are working on strategies to plan out our writing … first we tell the information across our fingers, then we sketch our ideas across our pages, then we write!

In Math we’ve been hard at work with fact families. Fact families build a strong foundation for understanding the relationship between addition and subtraction.  Our December Problem of the Month had us exploring growing sums in a triangular pattern! Our January Problem of the Month has us looking closely at dinosaur legs!

Martin Luther King Day brings us lots of opportunities to talk about fairness, kindness, and standing up for what we feel is right.  The kids love reading about him, talking about him, and coming up with their own dreams for a peaceful world!
