Reading Comprehension Strategy: Schema

- Making Connections Between New and Known Information.

- Text to self connections remind the reader of something that happened in his or her life.

- Text to text connections remind the reader of something that happened in another book they have read.

- Text to world connections remind the reader of something they know about in the greater world context through the news or from knowing about history.

Why are these connections important?

- They can help the reader understand character motivation and behavior.

- They can help the reader make predictions.

- They can help the reader better understand the context.

- They can help the reader ask essential questions about what they are reading.

- They can help the reader become actively engaged in the story.

- They can help the reader emphasize with characters and situations.

Homework

Homework Packets: Expect a Homework Contract every Monday; it needs to be returned on Friday.  This gives your child a choice of when to complete his/her homework that week.  Homework is sent home as a review of previously presented material.  There will be some "at home" projects due throughout the year.  Book Reviews, science projects, Star Student, etc. assignments with be sent home only after I have presented the process and given expectations in class.

Hot Pencil Program: Students complete up to 40 math fact problems each night.  If your child's goal is met, he/she moves onto the next letter.

District Homework Policy for Second Graders: 20 minutes a night, excluding reading log times.  If your child is spending more than 20 minutes a night, please see me so we can discuss and possibly modify.
